Technology Application Methods in Archaeological Research and Results Dissemination Conference

The Greek Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Institute of Crete has organized a Conference in Rethymno, Crete, Greece in 26-28 May 2000.

During this conference DAEDALUS made an oral presentation (Greek language) entitled "The Hybrid Electronic Publication Environment for Cultural Heritage products via the use of state-of-art Technology".

Our solution was based on Automatic Electronic Classification and Distributed Information Management.

GRS - Global Replication Schedule

DAEDALUS is proud to present a brand new product in the critical field of System-centric Software, under the codename GRS ( Global Replication Scheduler ). The product, is actually a Software Tool intended to help systems administrators to replicate data on any storage media according to their requirements, with unique efficiency and flexibility. Today, the amazing expansion of resources, content and communication potential introduced by modern operating systems -such as Win95 and WinNTs- offered the opportunity for a true power environment, to even the small business office. The dreamed transition to the Internet based economic model, is taking off even sooner than expected.
To support this pace of progress, a new breed of innovative and advanced software tools will have to quench the demand for a highly automated and robust enterprise environment.
GRS, endeavors to be one of them !

NEMUS (NEural MUlticlassifier System)

DAEDALUS presents an advanced new product in the field of industrial automation, as a result of multi-annual research in pattern recognition. The product, codenamed 'NEMUS' (NEural MUlticlassifier System) is a highly modular S/W application assessing the full cycle of intelligent image recognition and classification, plus driving of an industrial robot suitable for any automated service (i.e. parts assembly). The product presentation describes the operation and S/W procedural segments of a "smart" robotic system equipped with a vision sensory system.
In the example provided through the respective Product Pages, the full potential of the system is demonstrated in a classic application: the vision system recognizing a number of randomly placed parts and the robot automatically assembling them back on their complex placeholder. This quite ambitious feat is achieved only in S/W, with an optimized, simple and straight forward unattended process. NEMUS, as a practical high-tech, highly modular and customizable S/W approach is introduced to the intense need for development of robotic systems characterized by flexibility and adaptability, which may lead to a very significant reduction of production costs in existing applications and, also be used in new demanding applications as a trully generic system.
The S/W system developed is based on the optical recognition of objects to be manipulated, located in the workspace area of the robotic manipulator. The product is targeted to the OEM market. Complete customization, enhancement, know-how and sources, may be offered to OEM customers, at very attractive pricing. An overall solution with unequaled benefits! (The product comprises composite know-how and R&D in the fields of: Software Engineering, Pattern Recognition, Neural Networks, Industrial Robotics).
The concept behind high-tech products -such as NEMUS, is actually quite trivial! Very low-cost 'labor' for repeated routineous tasks, where the skills of the 'human machine vision & reasoning system' performance, are delivered with an unequaled dexterity, yet suffering from several natural constrains and deficiencies -besides labor cost. The NEMUS system will perform complex tasks at an indefatigable rate, on a 24-hour basis. Among innovative concepts introduced, is open architecture. This simply implies that the system is independent of the actuating part (i.e. robotic arm) and may be easily customized for any small or large robot system, in small laboratory to heavy industry applications. Any specific task may be easily trained by anyone and the afterward automated recognition and actuation procedures, may commence immediately.
Delicate as well as heavysome tasks, are commonly tackled with the same ease!

"ICONS" of the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator - CDROM Edition

The current edition constitutes a multimedia enriched adaptation and transfer of the important book "ICONS", in CDROM format produced by DAEDALUS INFORMATICS Ltd.
The icons should not be regarded as a simple creation of art, or as noteworthy treasures, which the readers will scrutinise with the interest reserved for a museum piece.
The spirit of the icons proclaims a living, true and personal communication with the mother of the Lord, with Jesus Christ and with the saints, the friends of God. The icons open up a window on ultimate realities through which we see the human nature divinised in the presence, full of grace, of the Saints. They give a reply to anxious existential questions and provide the foundations for a civilisation based on the value and respect for the human person.

"THE CRETAN PAINTER THEOPHANIS" of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita - CDROM Edition

The current edition constitutes a multimedia enriched adaptation and transfer of the important book "The Cretan painter Theophanis", in CDROM format produced by DAEDALUS INFORMATICS Ltd. The primary intension is to present the monumental work by the most important Greek painter of the 16th century, to the national and international audience. The painter Theophanis Strelitzas Bathas from Heraklio of Crete worked during the first half of the 16th century at Mount Athos and wall painted entire parts of several monasteries, such as the katholikon and the refectory of Lavra and the katholikon of the Stavronikita monastery. As an experienced painter and expert of the byzantine tradition, Theophanis embodied in his artistic work the anxiety and pursuit of his era in the wider area of the art of drawing. "The iconographic innovations which Theophanis ventures to make at the Monastery of Stavronikita reveal an artist who does not confine himself to the scrupulous repetition of good models, but wants to attempt, to some degree, even in the strictly iconographic sphere, to enrich and renew his stock in different ways. This means that he had realized his ability to be creative within the limitations imposed by the nature of a traditional artist's work, and also that he had the conviction of his own authority, imparted to him by the general contemporary recognition that he was an authentic Orthodox artist, "the finest iconographer".

3rd EUROPEAN WAVE ENERGY CONFERENCE

Incorporating Waves, Tidal and Marine Currents, 30 September - 2 October 1998, PATRAS, Greece.

The oceans hold huge potential of exploitable and renewable energies. The results of scientific and industrial efforts in the past decades have shown that the conversion of these resources into usable energy is very promising and mention is made in the White Paper for a Community Strategy of the Commission published in 1998. Further activities in this field are therefore justified and could be carried out within the forthcoming 5th Framework Programme of the EU.

Recognition and support by the general public, by public organisations and industry and the member states are demanded. But where do we stand today with regard to the research and technical development of suitable conversion methods and strategies, and what level of acceptance can we expect from the world around us? The presentation of the latest results and a description of the state-of-the-art are absolutely essential again and again in order to maintain the interest of all the stakeholders in this field of energy, aiming at further dynamic steps forward.

Adaptation of an optimal EDMS (Electronic Document Management System) in British Telecom (BT)

In 1998 we had the opportunity to make an official presentation in BT premises (London/UK) of a solution that would correspond to overall improvement (operational, social, welfare) and direct economic benefits to the organisation by the adaptation of an optimal EDMS (Electronic Document Management System).
DAEDALUS introduced the imperative prerequisites, such as a robust classification strategy, the definition of a coherent electronic filing structure, a minimal and optimal adaptation of existing standards, among others for enterprise level (entire BT organisation).
Our solution was based on a S/W produced by DAEDALUS codenamed PERGAMOS III, as well as on the state-of-art research product ADAMITE (Advanced Document Architecture for Multimedia Information Transfer & Exchange).

Cyprus Chamber of Industry & Commerce - Join the Internet Era

The Cyprus Chamber of Industry and Commerce (KEBE) is now issuing the "Business Directory" on a CD-ROM and promotes your Company through the Internet.

The KEBE in cooperation with Alpha Omega Informatics, pioneer organization in the field of electronic publications, will publish the standard 1997 "Business Directory" guide in an electronic format on a CD-ROM. Moreover, the whole content of the guide will appear on the DAEDALUS Internet Servers, making it available to millions of worldwide users. For many years, KEBE is publishing the most complete and thoroughly informed guide of business/organizations in Cyprus using the conventional printing methodology. This guide is definitely a valuable tool for thousands of businessmen in the Cypriot and worldwide market. Every Cypriot company is registered either alphabetically, or according to product or service, thus providing a valuable index of key information describing them.

  • Now they can easily locate you and find out more about you

Verbatim, as time is changing, so should be the promotion of the enterprises. Though the conventional guide is handy and convenient, it can not compete the search facilities and the speed of retrieval presented by electronic information. Moreover, the volume and type of information had to be limited to specifics such as the name of the company, the address and a short catalog of products or services. Imagine how much more impressive and precise this will be, when the registration of your company is completed and detailed. Your logo, the description of products or services, the selected advertisements, a short but concise videoclip -among others.

  • Suddenly your company is known all over the world

This is going to happen when all CD-ROM registered companies appear on the Internet. Millions of users can "see, listen, learn" about your company in their daily search. It could be a simple visitor or, it can be your next customer or an international associate. Your attention please: the first stop of those who are searching for business-type information, is the European Chambers of Commerce and then the National Chamber. Therefore, when "Cyprus" is selected, it is definite that they will "come across" your company.
Don't waste any more of your precious business time, join the Internet revolution now!...

  • DAEDALUS establishes Web Domain for Industrial Solutions

DAEDALUS Informatics has officially commenced operation of the www.daedalus.gr Internet site, in May 1997. The site facilities and equipment are located at DAEDALUS Headquarters in Glyfada, Athens, Greece. The Servers will immediately host the activities of the Daedalus group companies, as well as those of the Cypriot and English branches.
The major anticipation of this enterprise, apart from the commercial and promotional rational, is to offer to the international audience of researchers, academics and fans of the Hellenic inheritance and civilization, an invaluable resource of a legitimate on-line information repository, aided by the wondrous advancements of multimedia technology. Towards this purpose, a number of original, highly esteemed electronic publications are due to be released or produced by the Group on CDROM media, with a simultaneous availabity on the Internet. A significant step towards this goal is the recent addition of the monumental publication "The History of Cyprus", the Greek version of which is now released.
DAEDALUS, is currently offering complete and fully customizable S/W solutions for integral Enterprise Networking, based on established standards and a large proportion of innovative, next generation S/W tools built by DAEDALUS. The Company offers an advanced Enterprise-level Information Management and Publication solution based on a Docu-centric approach via a Distributed Database model. The model anticipates structuring of the Corporate Information into 4 successive layers: Interior Domain, Intranet Domain, Extranet Domain, Web Domain.
A further important aim is the active promotion and advancement in the upcoming field of Renewable Energy Technology (RET). DAEDALUS is a worldwide pioneer in industrial R&D in the field of Wave Energy Technology. After seventeen years of established research, the company actively promotes strategic turn key solutions for direct implementation of wave & wind energy technologies for a variety of conventional applications, such as energy storage, electric power production, desalinization, etc.
Finally, the server will dedicate a significant part of its activity on practically demonstrating the potential for what may be called "Internet business shifting". Simply put, a very limited number of representative Greek enterprises will be selected and be offered a formal cooperation scheme which will allow DAEDALUS to study, propose and actually migrate part of the enterprise activities onto an equally -and progressively more advanced- operational Internet based model. This partnership will allow the multiannual experience and know-how of DAEDALUS to be streamlined so as to greatly enhance the business potential and subsequent expected benefits of the respective partner. DAEDALUS expects to gain a great deal of experience and upgrade its commercial status in the offered field of services and consultancy the company provides. A very significant service will be also offered to the Greek SMEs (Small - Medium Enterprise) by providing a model example through the publicly accessible server, which may well resemble their operational model. It is hoped that this actual working example will inspire a new breath of growth potential into the tormented Greek enterprise.
You may find more information about the actual projects through upcoming information on this Server, or, you may specifically request information directly via the following E-mail address: daedalushq@mail.daedalus.gr

Important: If you believe that your enterprise or line of business would gain significant benefit by entering the Internet era, or, if you wish to participate in a venture of migrating part of your commercial activities on the Internet, you may discover that you should be talking to the people at Daedalus. Is is easy to contact us through E-Mail or other form of conventional communication.

THE EUROPEAN CONGRESS ON RENEWABLE ENERGY

The European Congress on Renewable Energy Implementation was held in Athens, 5-7 May 1997, and hosted a wide industrial and academic participation from EEC and TMC countries as well.

This important event aimed at determining ways of overcoming obstacles towards the much needed widespread implementation of Renewable Energies (RE) in Europe, to present political and economic issues on RE technologies and to strengthen the energy cooperation between EU Member States and Third Countries. Emphasis will also be given on the ways of RE implementation and exploitation and on their role to the formulation of the national and European energy policy.
The importance of this event is reinforced by the fact that it will constitute an important opportunity to discuss the Green Paper: "Energy for the Future: Renewable Sources of Energy". This document has been launched by the European Commission in order to stimulate wide consultation and discussion with all interested parties and Community Institutions on how to promote a significant increase in the share of renewables in our energy mix. The conclusions of the Congress could contribute substantially to the definition of a more detailed Community strategy with an Action Plan which the Commission will establish later this year.
DAEDALUS participation presented a new generation RET system entitled: "Introduction to a Hybrid (wave & wind) Renewable Energy Technology (RET) Multipurpose site". You may find more information about the actual project through upcoming information on this Server, or, you may specifically request information directly via the following E-mail address: daedalushq@mail.daedalus.gr

Important: DAEDALUS hits the News. The inernational publication on Renewable Energy Directions "Fresh Outlook", dedicated a commendable overview to DAEDALUS activities in RET. Apparently concern and active support for the RET industry is growing rapidly worldwide.

    Pergamos III on alpha release

DAEDALUS Informatics has officially announced release of the Alpha Version of Pergamos III S/W. The product, is the long expected successor of the amazing Pergamos v.1.12 DOS version, which has successfully served a number of highly diversified range of applications in the domestic and Cypriot market. An English language version of Pergamos v.1.12 has been also available since 1991 and has been exported to the European market as to serve niche applications and pilot projects. A revolutionary product, perhaps quite ahead of the anticipated market, Pergamos became available in the Hellenic commerce as early as 1988. It received quite some noticeable attention in the -at the time- developing areas of Multimedia and Office Automation, since it attempted to introduce a straight - forward and commercially viable bridge between several markets -such as Document Management, Multimedia and multiformat Information Management etc. The product carried accumulated research since 1980s in image processing, distributed databases, hierarchical storage management and operating sytems design -among other fields, and it was one of the good examples of a successful migration of long term academic and industrial R&D, into a commercial product. Since 1990, Pergamos has participated as the Tool of choise in a number of EEC projects and was subsidized under a COMETT II project concerned with the application of Hypermedia as a Training Tool. This event actually trigered the forthcoming introduction of a full product, aimed at delivering to the modern office, a general purpose common access Tool for general purpose Information Management, Rendering, Dissemination and Distribution as well as a superb Tool for information Structuring and Presentation. In essence, Pergamos was an optimum extension to the Operating System and, could be realy justified as one of the most flexible and convenient tools of its time for advanced information management -education perhaps being the best example. A proof of success and the result of high quality S/W engineering, Pergamos continues to serve a variety of over five-year old applications, with an unsurpassed innovation, flexibility and power. Although a DOS version (entirely written in Assembly language), it functions extremely well under the WIN95 environment as a natural extension to managing applications and data alike.
The road to maintain and promote such a tool has been anything but facile -especially in the gravely poor and undeveloped Greek market. However, it has always been the firm position of the Company to provide an integral product of worlwide status and quality level. This partly explains the hazards for the development and delayed release of the Pergamos III version. Bearing a heavy inheritance, the successor will be equiped as to offer a break- through solution not only to the amplified modern problem of information management, but also to the demand imposed by heavily dispersed and networked multimedia database management, especially as imposed by the Internet revolution. Pergamos III, is currently available to a selected number of Alpha Testers and a first product release is expected to reach the market by September 1997. Originally targeted as an OEM oriented product, is trully fit for the purpose as it is parametric on nearly every aspect. Among most distinguished features, is the capability to instantly select -or program- the national language at which the entire program menus will display.
Pergamos III, is a full implementation of the Win32 architecture as to offer the potential for enterprise-level operational capacity, speed and networking. Most important, this provides for native S/W compatibility with the Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. Special care has been taken as to assure stability and minimum range of system requirements, as well as to allow excellent operation even in low capacity systems. Finally, a mature innovative and robust approach in true and total information management. The user has immense power at hand without realizing the underlaying engineering as he may design a distributed multimedia database by merely placing objects on screen. For developers and users alike, this is the ultimate tool to further extend your operating system. Highly more important, Pergamos aims quite higher as to offer a usable introduction to the upcoming era of computing and briefly stated, ...this may be the tool you will be using for capturing knowledge.
The future is always very close and this constitutes a large part of the activities of DAEDALUS. The next step, the product to advance the concept of Agent operated Distributed Computing "ADAMITE" is well under way, as it should eventually succeed Pergamos.
You may find more information about the actual projects through upcoming information on this Server, or, you may specifically request information directly via the following E-mail address: daedalushq@mail.daedalus.gr

    First draft information on ADAMITE

The advent of Multimedia & their impact on related technological implementation, will endeavour a new era in multiple fields of societal structure, most apparent perhaps being education and business. Supporting technologies in information interchange are due to proliferate and evolve in a proportional rate as well as in variable levels. Although significant leaps are performed in Metropolitan Level Networking Infrastructure, moderate progress is demonstrated in protocols and methodologies able to efficiently undertake both physical carrier and structural integrity for conveying the multi-format information demands of multimedia, in a trully universal mode. A further de facto prerequisite demand for such protocol technologies, should also be considered to be simplicity of use and implementation, as well as a multifaced universal acceptance in both developed and under development countries. As evidenced by the rapid explosion of the Internet, a latent -lest vast- demand for information exploitation and proliferation of knowledge, is worldwide apparent. However, the enabling technology that will unleash this potential is not yet clearly evident, or it may even be occasionally obscured by the adversities of the market diversification and lack of elaborated standards. The expected revolutionary product that will re-orientate the energy potential hidden into our world of dispersed information, may really exist and what is more, it is more likely to be Software (as proven in cases like Netscape).
Hence, the next step, should probably be considered to be a tool able to:

  • Handle distributed information irrespective of location, bandwidth protocol, format and linked application.
  • Provide a facile, universal and highly customizable way of language and user interface.
  • Offer advanced pattern recognition and information seeking and retrieval in either alphanumeric or image format.
  • Provide a common ground to a variety of groups of people to intercommunicate and collaborate under a common as well as personalized environment.
  • Offer a stable, simple yet robust and expandable -albeit inherently advanced- solution in knowledge capturing, synthesis and redistribution.
  • Be very simple to install and maintain, as well as withstand evolution of both demand and applications.

After so many events of the recent years in S/W evolution, all these assets appear to be somewhat familiar and desirable by almost everyone. Nevertheless, considering the increased complexity that keeps accumulating in worldwide effort towards implementation of similar solutions, one should probably come to the rather dissapointing conclusion that such a feat, is by no means directly attainable.
For the last twelve years or so, this endeavour has been a major part of R&D at DAEDALUS, and the results, have been accumulated in an upcoming product codenamed "ADAMITE". This forthcoming product is a suitably engineered tool able to take advantage of the above stated demand and comes as a consequent further development from applicable research conducted for commercial and academic purposes, as well as from already embeded work into generic tools for the purpose of Multimedia Information Management. A brief non confidential introduction to the modules and features of "ADAMITE" is provided here. More information will be released at the rate of progress and commercial implementation.
  • Wind & Wave Technology Survey - The Internet Survey on RET

DAEDALUS Informatics has officially announced the scheduled release of a new Electronic Journal Publication dedicated to the promotion and progress of Renewable Energy Technology (RET). DAEDALUS holds international patent and state-of-art research in the field of Wave energy.
The Journal will be entitled "Wind & Wave Technology Survey" and will be an attempt to provide a legitimate as well as extensive coverage of field proven as well as R&D level technology in the fields of Wind & Wave Energy. The Journal will be implemented in a totally electronic format and will be delivered as an on-line content available through the Internet Servers of DAEDALUS, as well as in CDROM format. Expected launch for inauguration issue wil be July 1997. WWTS, will be a quarter annual edition and will be addressed to a wide audience of industrial and academic recipients, as well as to graduate or post graduate research. The Journal will be available at variable subsciption rates depending on access level, which would imply Internet access subscription, bi-annual CD subscription or, a combination of both. Fees will be quite moderate as to facilitate a wider proliferation of the much desired awareness and participation level from the public. The language used will be English and, upon estimation of results after the first quarter, the Greek and other national languages will be also considered along with the option for localized editions. Although the primary editorial panel comes from the Industrial and Academic domains, a flexible and open participation scheme will be offered to authors, industrialists and post-graduate students (a by no means excaustive list) to formally express their ideas, projects or papers. Encouragement will be ample and prospective authors, besides the honour of participation for a nobble cause, will be also awarded a free subscription. Subscribers and general readers of the Journal will be requested to grade the articles they read and the most popular ones will participate in an annual competition for prices and awards.
It is important to stress again that this and the few following years will be of crucial importance for the future of Renewable Energy on our planet. It is by no means a secret to state that politics and worldwide economy conventions will heavily disfavour investment and progress in the future of RET. However, perhaps the most frigthening conclusion of all, is that people demonstrate an amazingly low level of awareness and active concern for something so important that is evidently going to adversely affect life on earth as a system. Although no further comments will be offered at this site as to the reasons and interests that have led the world to this predicament, modern societies -and particularly the scientific communities- should regain their self-esteme and mental capacity and attempt to regain the lost ground. This attempt, is a mere contribution towards this goal and you are requested to actively participate.
